About The Department
The Department of Fruit Science was started with the inception of the University i.e., March, 2010. Department is fully operational in the fields of teaching, research and extension activities. The Post-Graduation (PG) programme has been started from the academic session 2018-19 and Ph.D. programme started from academic session 2020-21. At present faculties of Department of Fruit Science are engaged in teaching of under graduate (UG) programme running in College of Horticulture. The university is located at Bundelkhand region; the region has bestowed with natural resources, however, the poor management, package and practices of fruit crops, drought condition, less irrigation facility are major challenges. Thus, department is dedicatedly working for enhancement of the production of fruit crops through research and extension activities. The Department has well qualified faculty members. All faculty members possess Ph. D. and NET.
Mandate of the Department:
- Creating skilled human resource in field of horticulture in general and fruit science in particular.
- To conduct location specific research in order to solve technical and specific problems of fruit culture, being faced by farming community.
- Formulating package of practices for optimization of farmers’ income and dissemination of appropriate technology to the farmers and orchardists.
VISION:
- To emerge as a global centre of excellence in teaching, research and extension in agriculture and allied sciences in the country to ensure sustained healthy food, nutrition and livelihood security.
MISSION:
- The university is committed to the cause of Indian agriculture through its quality teaching, demand-driven and location-specific research and extension programmes in the light of dynamism of socio-economic and agro ecological conditions, management perceptions, international trade scenarios and government policies.
OBJECTIVES:
- To impart quality education at graduation, post-graduation and doctorate level in the field of Fruit Science.
- Survey, collection, conservation, evaluation and utilization of drought hardy indigenous fruit species.
- Standardization of INM, HDP, canopy management, moisture conservation, propagation and organic fruit cultivation of draught hardy fruit crops.
Course offered:
The Department offers courses of Fruit science at three levels i.e. B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture, M.Sc. (Hort.) and Ph.D.(Hort.) in Fruit Science to the students with the present intake capacity.

Thrust Areas of Research:
- Identification, collection, conservation, evaluation, and utilization of indigenous fruit species and developing package and practices for drought hardy fruit crops.
- Introduction and evaluation of new fruit species like dragon fruit, date palm, strawberry etc.
- INM, HDP, moisture conservation, organic cultivation, canopy management and fruit based inter cropping models to enhance the income of farming community.
- Protocol for mass multiplication of elite planting materials and availability to the farmers.
Pedagogic Practices
- The Department is using regularly smart class/seminar room facilities established in horticulture department for teaching the students.
- The online plate form like zoom and Google Meet used by the department faculty during the pandemic period for the teaching.
- The URKUND for detection and prevention of plagiarism is being actively used by the faculty as well as students for the scientific research writing and preparation of e manuals.
