Department of Post Harvest Technology

The Department of Post Harvest Technologywas established with the inception of the University i.e., March, 2010 to meet the increasing demand of developing appropriate technologies for post-harvest management and processing of horticultural crops. Since then the Department was fully operational in the fields of teaching of UG students and extension activities till 2018. After the enrolment of first post graduate batch in year 2018 and first Ph. D. batch in year 2020 the department is fully engaged in field of research too. At present, faculty members of the department are engaged in teaching and guiding under graduate (UG), PG and Ph. D. Programs running at College of Horticulture and other constituent colleges of the university. The teaching and research programs of the department are designed in such a way that the students exposed to the recent trends and challenges in the field.

The funding for infrastructural development and research is mainly through RKVY, ICAR, UPCST, UPCAR and university fund. The department is involved in conduction research on all aspects of food science and technology with special emphasis on the post harvest management and value addition of fresh horticultural produce.

The department has highly qualified faculty members with research experience in the different areas of post harvest technology of horticultural crops.

Vision:

  • To emerge as a global centre of excellence in teaching, research and extension in agriculture and allied sciences in the country to ensure sustained healthy food, nutrition and livelihood security.

Mission:

  • The university is committed to the cause of Indian agriculture through its quality teaching, demand-driven and location-specific research and extension programmes in the light of dynamism of socio-economic and agro ecological conditions, management perceptions, international trade scenarios and government policies.

Objectives:

  • To establish post harvest management facilities for research, training and extension activities.
  • To develop and disseminate package of practices for post harvest management of region specific horticultural crops.
  • To develop effective post harvest research and extension programme to strengthen the link between researchers and extensionists.
  • To undertake basic, applied and adaptive research to address current and future challenges through post harvest management options relevant to the prevailing agro-climatic and socio-economic situations.
  • To offer diploma/certificate courses to meet out national priorities and policies, viz., skill development and employment generation, doubling farmers income, nutritional security and minimizing food loss/ waste.

Thrust Areas of Research:

  • Development of value-added and minimally processed products from underutilized and unexploited horticultural crops of the Bundelkhand region.
  • Development of minimally processed fruit and vegetable.
  • Development of functional foods/health drinks from fruits and vegetables.
  • Storage studies of different fruits and vegetables in the Bundelkhand.

Strengths:

  • Dynamic faculty members from different reputed institutions with diverse expertise.
  • Fully functional research laboratories and processing unit in the department, equipped and all necessary facilities.
  • Post Harvest Management Facility (funded by RKVY) is available and equipped with 02 analytical labs with modern equipment, 01 cold store and 01 processing unit.
  • Modern laboratory facilities are available at the department and Central Laboratory Facility of the university for estimation of nutritional and quality components of food which include latest equipment like headspace gas analyzer, advance UV-VIS spectrophotometer, fermenter, automatic fibre analyzer, automatic protein analyzer, texture analyzer, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, viscometer, Hunter Lab (Colourflex EZ) etc.
  • Different food processing equipment for processing of fruits, vegetables and cereals are available at the processing unit of the department.
  • Equipped with FSSAI registered Fruit Processing Unit which is being used for the commercial production of processed products. It is also being utilized for hands-on trainings of students, FPO’s, NGO’s and others.
  • Fully functional Experiential Learning Unit to develop entrepreneurial skills in 4th year UG students of horticulture.

Facilities:

Reading Room: A reading room has been established at the department. It is a library service unit that serves the needs of post harvest management and other related academic areas. It contains collections that are relevant to the academic areas it serves as well as literature related to cultural, artistic, or historical value.

Seminar Hall: A seminar hall has been established at department that is used for conducting various cocurricular activities, including seminars and workshops.

UG Laboratory: An UG laboratory has been established at the department. Basic processing equipment required for conducting the practical of UG students and like fruit mill, baby pulper, gas stove, vegetable cutter etc. are available in laboratory.

PG Laboratory: The PG laboratory is fully equipped with instruments required for post graduate research has been established. Instruments like hot air oven water bath, electronic balance, laminar air flow chamber, autoclave etc. are available in the laboratory.
Post Harvest Management Facility: A Post Harvest Management Facility funded by RKVY has been established at the department. The facility includes 02 analytical laboratories equipped with modern analysis facility like advance headspace gas analyzer, rheometer, tintometer, water activity meter, moisture analyzer, UV-vis spectrophotometer etc. It contains a dry processing unit and wet processing unit along with packaging facility.

Processing Unit : A well-equipped processing unit consisting of equipment like destoner, bubble washer, hydraulic juice press, aonla pricker, shredder, juice extractor, pasteurizer etc are available in the unit.

Central Laboratory Facility: It is an state-of-art facility established in university equipped with most of the modern facilities required for the research in the area of Post Harvest Technology viz. texture analyzer, viscometer, Hunter Colour Lab, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, automatic fiber analyzer, automatic fat analyzer, automatic protein analyzer, etc.
