Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry
Silviculture and Agroforestry is the main department of College of Forestry imparting UG PG education, research and extension. Imparting quality teaching to the students of UG and PG in forestry is the main mandate of the department. Presently department is offering masters in forester with specialization in Silviculture and Agroforestry. The department has highly qualified faculty with NET qualified, doctorate and teaching and research experience in the field of Silviculture, Forest Ecology and Agroforestry. Department is engaged in research activities related to silviculture and agroforestry.
Thrust areas
- Diagnostic survey and socioeconomic appraisal of existing farming system and development of Suitable Agroforestry systems for Bundelkhand.
- Studies pertaining to phylodiversity, ecology, carbon sequestration and valuation of ecosystem services of different ecosystems in the Vindhyan region.
- To standardize the nursery propagation techniques through seed and vegetative means of different RET/ medicinal plant species of Vindhyan region.
- Rehabilitation studies of degraded land (Mining, ravines and salt affected areas etc.) of Bundelkhand
- Consultancy and extension services in field of silviculture and agroforestry.
Facilities in the departments
1. Silviculture Laboratory
The laboratory of Silviculture is established in the department of Silviculture and Agroforestry. Basic facilities like tree height and diameter/girth measuring instruments (Measuring Tape (20 m Measuring Tape (50 m), Tree Caliper, Digital caliper, Ravi Multimeter, Spiegel Relaskop). Hot air oven for dry of the vegetation and soil samples. Electronic balance for weighing of the samples, bark Guage for measuring bark thickness, Double distillation unit for distilled water, Pressler’s increment Borer determination of growth rate, age etc. are also available in laboratory.
2. Agroforestry Laboratory
The laboratory of Agroforestry is established in the department of Silviculture and Agroforestry. The instruments like seed germinator dual chamber, electronic balance for weighing purpose, Hot Air Oven for drying of the soil and vegetation samples, Leaf area meter, Chain Saw, Soxhlet Apparatus, Digital Moisture Meter for Seeds, Heating mantle, oil extraction unit are some of the instruments available in laboratory.
3. Dendrology Laboratory cum Herbarium
The laboratory of Dendrology is established in the department of Silviculture and Agroforestry. The instruments like dissecting microscopes, herbarium press, Herbarium cabinets, Sterio zoom microscope, hand lenses, herbarium sheets for preparing herbarium samples by following standard procedure is available in dendrology laboratory. More than 300 plant specimens are also housed in the laboratory.

4. Instructional Farm
Farm facilities: The farm store of Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, is having various agricultural implements/tools for carrying out various field operations for laying out of research trials of PG students. The list of implements is as follows:

Programs Offered
The department is offering M.Sc. Forestry degree program in Silviculture and Agroforestry as per the recommendation of the 19th BSMA Committee of ICAR. The post-graduate degree program, has a total of 70 credits which includes 20 credits for major courses, 08 credits for minor courses, 06 credits for supporting courses, 05 credits for common courses, 01 credit for the seminar and 30 credits for Master’s thesis research.
Objectives:
- To generate scientific temperament among the students by using modern educational tools.
- To produce technically sound graduate, post-graduate student in the field of Silviculture and Agroforestry.
- To carry out basic and applied research in Silviculture and Agroforestry.
