The Department of Veterinary Pathology at the College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Banda University of Agriculture & Technology (BUAT), Banda has been established as a core academic and diagnostic unit to support undergraduate veterinary education, disease investigation, and animal health services, in consonance with the academic vision of the University. The Department is responsible for imparting comprehensive theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training to undergraduate students strictly in accordance with the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE) prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).
The curriculum of Veterinary Pathology is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of general and systemic pathology, animal oncology, clinical pathology, necropsy techniques, and pathology of infectious, non-infectious, avian, laboratory, and wild animal diseases. Emphasis is laid on correlating gross, microscopic, and clinical findings to enable accurate disease diagnosis and interpretation, thereby strengthening the foundation for clinical, preventive, and therapeutic veterinary practices. The Department is equipped with essential and well-organized infrastructure, including pathology laboratories, histopathology facilities, necropsy area, and teaching aids necessary for effective delivery of pathology education. Through systematic teaching and practical exposure, the Department plays a vital role in developing diagnostic competence, scientific temperament, and professional responsibility among future veterinarians.
Mandate
The mandate of the Department of Veterinary Pathology is to impart systematic and application-oriented education in veterinary pathological sciences, including general and systemic pathology, animal oncology, veterinary clinical pathology, and necropsy, in accordance with the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE) prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).
The Department aims to develop a strong foundation in understanding the disease mechanisms, gross and microscopic pathology, clinicopathological correlation, and laboratory diagnostics, enabling accurate disease diagnosis and interpretation. Emphasis is placed on practical training in histopathology, haematology, urinalysis, cytology, and post-mortem examination, while ensuring adherence to biosafety, ethical, and professional standards, thereby preparing competent veterinary graduates for effective animal health management.
Mission
The Department of Veterinary Pathology is committed to delivering high-quality education in veterinary pathological sciences in accordance with MSVE–VCI guidelines. The Department strives to build strong theoretical understanding and practical proficiency in general and systemic pathology, clinical pathology, animal oncology, and necropsy techniques. It focuses on developing diagnostic competence through gross and microscopic evaluation, laboratory investigations, and clinicopathological correlation, while fostering ethical conduct, biosafety awareness, scientific inquiry, and lifelong learning essential for professional veterinary practice.
Vision
To establish the Department as a recognized center of excellence in veterinary pathology through effective teaching, diagnostic expertise, and research-oriented learning, producing competent veterinarians equipped with sound pathological knowledge to contribute to animal health care, disease prevention, and scientific advancement.
Objectives
- To provide comprehensive instruction in general and systemic pathology of domestic, avian, laboratory, and wild animals in conformity with MSVE–VCI standards.
- To develop practical skills in post-mortem examination, tissue processing, histopathology, haematology, cytology, and urinalysis.
- To promote accurate interpretation of gross and microscopic lesions through effective clinicopathological correlation.
- To enhance understanding of disease mechanisms and pathological alterations in infectious, non-infectious, metabolic, toxic, and neoplastic conditions.
- To acquaint students with diagnostic laboratory procedures and essential investigative techniques in veterinary pathology.
- To inculcate professional ethics, safe laboratory practices, scientific reasoning, and research aptitude for responsible veterinary service.
CO1: General Veterinary Pathology
Explain the scope and causes of disease and identify cellular and tissue responses including degenerations, necrosis, apoptosis, circulatory disturbances, inflammation, wound healing, immunopathological reactions, pigmentations, and calcification.
CO2: Systemic Veterinary Pathology
Identify and interpret gross and microscopic pathological changes affecting the digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, haematopoietic, lymphoid, urinary, reproductive, nervous, endocrine systems, skin, eye, and ear.
CO3: Animal Oncology
Describe the classification, pathogenesis, and biological behavior of neoplasms, differentiate between benign and malignant tumours, and recognize gross and microscopic features of common tumours in domestic animals.
CO4: Veterinary Clinical Pathology
Perform and interpret routine haematological tests, blood smear examination, erythrocytic indices, and urinalysis, and understand the diagnostic value of cytology and biopsy techniques.
CO5: Necropsy and Veterolegal Pathology
Conduct systematic post-mortem examinations of domestic, avian, laboratory, and wild animals; recognize post-mortem changes; collect, preserve, and dispatch specimens; and prepare post-mortem and veterolegal reports.
CO6: Pathology of Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases
Explain the pathogenesis and pathological lesions of important viral, bacterial, mycoplasmal, fungal, parasitic, toxic, nutritional, and metabolic diseases of domestic animals.
CO7: Avian Pathology
Identify and interpret gross and microscopic lesions associated with major infectious, non-infectious, nutritional, metabolic, and management-related diseases of poultry, and perform poultry post-mortem examination.
CO8: Pathology of Laboratory and Wild Animals
Describe and recognize the pathological changes in important diseases of laboratory animals and wild animals, as outlined in the syllabus.
CO9: Histopathology and Diagnostic Techniques
Demonstrate histopathological processing, sectioning, staining, identification of microscopic lesions, and application of special stains and rapid diagnostic techniques.
